《豹》是里尔克最为著名的咏物名篇。这首诗作于1902年11月，里尔克因为生活的艰难，一直处于困惑之中。生活与艺术的矛盾，在贫困的诗人那里来得更为直接和突出。这是极难两全的问题，艺术要求诗人更为彻底更为纯粹，但生活的大手在你拓进的途中将你无情地拖入生存所必需的柴米油盐之中。

his vision, from the constantly passing bars,

has grown so weary that it cannot hold

anything else. it seems to him there are

a thousand bars; and behind the bars, no world.

隔着不时掠过的铁栏，他的目光

已变得如此疲倦，再无法

承受哪怕一眼。似乎面前

有千条栏杆;而栏杆之后别无他物。

as he paces in cramped circles, over and over,

the movement of his powerful soft strides

is like a ritual dance around a center

in which a mighty will stands paralyzed.

他强韧的.脚步灵巧地回旋，

在狭小的空间踱步不止，

在中心一个伟大的意志眩晕。

only at times, the curtain of the pupils

lifts, quietly—. an image enters in,

rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles,

plunges into the heart and is gone.
